The Racial Wealth Gap 50 Years

This year, we acknowledge the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  Rev King left many legacies: as a crusader for civil rights, voting rights, religious harmony, and peace. As Americans honor this anniversary, it is right to remember all his legacies, but for this article, the focus is the issue of income equality that motivated Dr. King in his commitment to economic justice. He said, “Now our struggle is for genuine equality, which means economic equality.” We can take some pride in the progress we have made, but also acknowledge that we have a long way to go. The wealth gap between black Americans and white Americans even seems to be widening.
